I was born and raised in East Texas – Longview to be precise.  My exposure to yoga started with a set of video tapes back in 1995 in my living room.  I had multiple knee injuries by this time in my life and was looking for a solution to help heal the damage I had caused to my knee.  Yoga seemed to be the answer.

I dabbled in all sorts of yoga for quite some time.  I found Bikram Yoga in 2002 and practiced as much as my busy schedule in the restaurant business would allow.  After leaving restaurant operations and settling into restaurant sales, I finally began focusing my efforts on a stronger yoga practice.  Bikram yoga was the only thing that helped my knee pain.  It also helped shed a few pounds, release a great amount of stress, and improve my overall health.

With increased efforts pain began to fade as I grew stronger and stronger with continued practice.  I made a full time commitment to Bikram Yoga in 2008 and made plans to attend teacher training in the Spring of 2009 in Palm Desert, CA.  I spent the most challenging 9 weeks of my life at Teacher Training with Bikram and his knowledgeable staff to earn my teaching certificate.   Since then I have taught with continued passion for the yoga.  I am truly fascinated with the health benefits of Bikram Yoga and am inspired by student testimonials I hear on a constant basis.  I feel so blessed to bring this yoga to the people of East Texas.

Mr. Fix It

I have spent the past 15 years working offshore as an engineer on either commercial merchant ships or oil rigs.  Long work days, steel decks and past ski injuries began to wreak havoc on my ankles and knees as my late twenties came and went.

After meeting my wife Rachel, she had always discussed the benefits of Bikram Yoga, but I just brushed them off to over-zealous enthusiasm for the practice.  She begged and begged for me to join her at the local studio, but I resisted until she decided to go to teacher training in 2009.  After that initial exposure to the practice, I have found that consistent, focused Bikram Yoga has eased my ankle and knee pain, reduced the amount of overall sleep that I need, and given me a true challenge that I strive to improve upon with each class I take.  I truly would not have believed all the hype myself unless I experienced the benefits first hand and I hope to encourage others to do the same.

I started practicing yoga in Dallas in 2001 with various yoga classes. During this time people kept telling me how much I would like Bikram Yoga and tried to convince me to try it. When I found out that Bikram Yoga was performed in a hot room I replied very definitely- No Thank you, that is not for me. Boy, I was wrong! I finally took my first Bikram Yoga class in 2005 and loved it! Initially, maybe not the class itself, but the benefits were unbelievable and a deep appreciation for the class followed as well.

You see, at the time I took my first class I was completing my Bachelor’s degree in music and had been dealing with a repetitive stress injury in my hand for some time. I had tried just about every therapy and alternative therapy I could think of and nothing was working. I took that first Bikram class for fun, but in the end, the yoga helped my hand more than anything else so I kept going back. The following year, in 2006, I went to teacher training to become a certified instructor so that I could share the benefits of Bikram Yoga with others.

Since 2006 I have taught in Austin and had a dedicated practice there while simultaneously completing my Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and certification to become a Registered Dietitian. I am very excited to be teaching Bikram Yoga in my home town- Tyler- and hope that you will give the hot room a try with an open mind and be amazed at the benefits that it offers!

When I first started practicing Bikram yoga in 2006, I had no idea what a consistent practice could do. I hated my first class. I was miserable and even cried. I had what Bikram calls a "screw loose brain and junk body." During my first class I thought, "Even if this is good for me, I don't have the energy for it."

Then, I went home and went to bed. I woke up only once instead of five times. I decided to go back to class again...and again...and again. Within a month, I had enough faith to give up on the antidepressants I had been trying to find happiness with for 13 years. Within three years, I developed enough discipline and consistency to go off my thyroid medicine that I had been taking since I was nine. I went from feeling isolated and depressed to making friends at the yoga studio. I learned how to face myself in the front mirror whether I was struggling or feeling good. That ability turned into being able to face life's struggles and my relationships with both strangers and loved ones in a more connected, uplifted way.

The yoga room gave me a safe place to grow, to explore, to mess up and not be given up on. I became a teacher in 2009 because I want to give anyone who has the courage to come to class the same space and encouragement to transform and realize their true potential. I have watched countless students transform their minds and bodies through a consistent practice. Bikram yoga is like finding a "health is wealth" goldmine of energy. It does not matter how good you are at the yoga, only that you come to class, try hard and never give up.

I grew up around movement. I remember dancing to the beat as a young girl while my mom taught aerobics. Throughout school I was always busy with sports. College brought distance running to get away from stress. All of this movement produced tight hips, shoulders, and ankles, and even worse, screw loose brain.

Bikram Yoga found me in the winter of 2010 in Austin, TX. It turned a page in my life. I started taking class 5-6 times a week immediately. I decided to move to LA after practicing consistently for a year and a half to get closer to the source, BIKRAM, to make sure this was for real. After meeting the man himself and practicing for 6 months at Bikram Yoga International Headquarters under Bikram, Rajashree and many other senior teachers, I was convinced. This yoga is ALL it's cracked up to be...and more.

Teacher training naturally came next. I graduated in the fall of 2012 and quickly decided that I wanted to be back in Texas, where it all began. This yoga has given me so much already and I am so excited to be passing on this wonderful gift to the fine folks of Tyler, TX. I feel like my life has finally begun and I can't wait to see what happens next.
